Back in 2011 NetherRealm elevated narrative in the brawler genre to new heights with its pseudo reboot of the Mortal Kombat series, so it’s only natural that the former Midway studio would build on this for its latest entry into the demesne of digital dust-ups.

Injustice: Gods Among Us, like its predecessor, thrusts you into a pretty meaty fable that sees The Joker - with a little help from Lex Luthor - detonate a nuclear bomb in Metropolis that wipes out the city as well as Kal-El’s pregnant better half, Lois Lane. Cue Superman’s trip to the dark side wherein he yanks out The Joker’s heart and swiftly sets about establishing a new world order in his own Kryptonian eyes.

Enter Batman who then summons a roster of DC superheroes from an alternate timeline in a bid to end Superman’s reign of terror, which, all in, should take you a little over seven hours. Yes, it’s clunky in spots, characters are a little too weighty and its game mechanics are not a patch on the Japanese fighters that have dominated the circuit since of the dawn of the genre, but Injustice works incredibly well thanks to its simplistic three button attack approach and a Batcave full of single player content, including training missions and the rock solid S.T.A.R.S. Labs, which has replaced Mortal Kombat’s now staple challenge tower.

And while the multiplayer feels a little light on modes, the vast line-up of characters, ingenious destructible environments and crowd pleasing appearances from most of the cast of the Justice League cartoon series more than makes up for it.
