Julia Roberts' first foray into the limelight is one of the better chick bonding movies of recent years. She, Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor are the trio who divide their time between dishing up the secret recipe deep-pan pies at the local smalltown pizza parlour, and discovering, as people tend to in movies of this sort, that men generally suck and girls pretty much rule.

All of which you will have heard before, but at least here it's done with enough sparky comedy and genuine warmth to offset any potential mawkishness. And Roberts is as luminous as ever.

A cliched tale but done with enough sparky comedy and genuine warmth to offset any potential mawkishness.
